ANTHONY BOWDEN

Anthony Bowden, school founder, and principal of Liberty Leadership Academy for Young Men is committed to reimagining the schooling experience establishing a learning institution wholly designed to meet the unique needs of African American teens. In his ten years of educational experience, Anthony served as a Manager in the Special Education Department for the DC Public School system. He oversaw special education services for 46,000 students across 115 schools, supporting teachers to ensure the success of special populations. As a school administrator for DC Public Schools, one of his many priorities was school and student culture and climate.

For Anthony, the student experience is the most important, and safety is the foundation of any impactful learning and development. Understanding the need for change, Anthony joined The Freedom Fellows Institute, where they develop and support talented leaders of color to found high-quality charter schools with one full year of leadership development. Anthony’s interest in improving reading literacy in young students of color led to a budding interest in writing. In 2016, he published his first children’s book titled “The Day Jake Went To College” to inspire young children of color to read. Anthony’s life has been dedicated to inspiring youth and giving back to underserved communities. Whether it’s coaching, writing children’s books, or leading schools, Anthony learns then leads in all aspects of my life.

ALEXIS BARNES

Alexis Barnes is passionate about young women becoming fierce advocates of their destinies. As a Spelman College graduate, she recognized a stark contrast between her empowering college experience and the inequality she witnessed in education firsthand. Understanding education as a social justice issue, she chose to uphold her college’s motto, “A choice to change the world,” by becoming an education servicewoman and joining Teach for America in Las Vegas Valley as a Math teacher. She’s served in various capacities in her career in education, working as a teacher, mentor, founder of new programs, and leader.

Following the completion of her Masters of Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she proudly served at Phoenix Charter Academy as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. She firmly believes education is one of the avenues that we can use to create a better and more equitable world. As founder and principal of Liberty Leadership Academy for Young Women she is developing a community school that prioritizes entrepreneurship and critical thinking where young women will be equipped with the tools to dismantle systemic issues that impact
